The men in the mountains are transfused blood from ground captives as an anti-radiation treatment because their bodies have not yet adapted to deal with the radiation remaining on Earth. In the second season, the remaining 48 detainees are captured by the Mountain Men and taken to Mount Weather. Under the leadership of Bellamy and Clarke, the young manage to survive the harsh surface conditions, battle hostile enemies, and establish contact with the Ark. They discover that several people survive the apocalypse: the Grounders, who live in clans locked in a power struggle The Reapers, another group of ground humans who have been turned into cannibals by the Mountain Men and the Mountain Men, who live in Mount Weather, are descendants of those who locked themselves in before the apocalypse.
Three generations have been born into space, but when life-support systems on the Ark begin to fail, one hundred incarcerated minors are sent to Earth in a last-ditch effort to determine if whether it is livable or at least saves resources for the remaining inhabitants of the Ark. Ninety-seven years after the devastating nuclear apocalypse wiped out nearly all life on Earth, thousands of people now live in an Earth-orbiting space station, which they call the Ark. The content is mainly about Clarke, Bellamy, Octavia, Jasper, Monty, Raven, Finn and Wells, the first people to set foot on Earth after the disaster while also focusing on Abby, Marcus, the Council member on "The Ark" and Thelonious, the Captain.
